Are you sure that this truck was used in NA? All your pictures are indicating the year 1944.

Yes Kuno, my handbook is dated "1944", but if you go to the <Australian War Memorial> site and browse it for "lancia", you will be shown a couple of photos of the Lancia Esaro in Africa. It is possible that they mistook it for a Lancia 3 Ro, but in that case blame the webmasters...

I would not dare to ask this question in public - but I must admitt, that I am not aware about the difference between the famous "3ro" and the "Esaro"....

Eh eh, :) I understand the problem... The Esaro was a medium truck (in the same class of the Fiat 626, O.M. Taurus, Bianchi Miles, Alfa-Romeo 430 etc.).
The 3 RO was a heavy truck like the Fiat 666, O.M. Ursus, Alfa-Romeo 800, Isotta-Fraschini D-80.

Correction

Beitragvon Lorenzo » 20/3/2008, 11:19

Due to some further research, I have the moral duty to correct this thread.
First of all, I discovered that the photos of the "Australian War Memorial" do not show a Lancia Esaro but a more common Lancia 3 Ro.
This is explained by the shape of the engine hand starter (in the Lancia Esaro it was in a horizontal position, not vertical like in the AWM photos), see photo below.
Secondly, I discovered that the Esaro was not yet ready for mass production before mid or late 1943, when war in Africa was over. It is not impossible that some Esaro truck made its appearance in Africa, like the Fiat 665 for example, but it is more fair to suppose that the Esaro served only in the 1943-45 period.
Therefore I politely ask our Webmaster to move this thread to the "Italienisches Heer" sub-forum, to avoid misundertandings.
Sorry for the mistake :(
